Airtours holidays was started in Lancashire back in 1972 by David Crossland. Initially a travel agent he started operating package holidays they took advantage of the massive gap in the market due to the demise of ILG the International Leisure Group, which owned Intasun Holidays. Airtours experienced a massive growth and at one point became the largest holiday company in the UK.
Airtours operated a unique policy of offering free child places up to the age of 19 years old. They also ran an excellent late booking product under the name of Sundeals which were very responsive to market forces and proved to be very profitable for the company.
In 2002 the company rebranded under the banner of My Travel Group PLC this also included a name change of the companies travel agents. All the travel agencies started to under go a name change from Going Places to My Travel. Shortly after the group ran into trouble and had to complete a financial restructure. The company received a lot of bad press and halted the name change of the agencies to My Travel and left them as Going Places.
Airtours own a number of other well known holiday companies such as Aspro Holidays and Direct Holidays. The group managed to get back into profit and carried millions of passengers from the UK, Northern Europe, and North America.
In February 2007 the My Travel Group announced a merger with the Thomas Cook Group which was given shareholders approval in May 2007. The merger has now been completed and the new parent company is called the Thomas Cook Group plc and has its headquarters in the UK.
